A 28-year-old Vienna man faces a felony charge after police say he left the scene after striking a pedestrian who had already been hit by another vehicle on Route 29 in Merrifield.

Fairfax County police identified William Wang as the driver of a 2024 Toyota Camry involved in the Dec. 29 crash near Braxton Wood Court.

Officers responded at 6:48 p.m. after Michelle Wheeler, 53, was struck while standing in the left eastbound lane of Route 29. Investigators said the driver of a 2020 Nissan Rogue hit Wheeler first, followed by the Camry allegedly driven by Wang.

Wheeler, who police said had no fixed address, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The Nissan driver was not injured and remained at the scene.

Wang turned himself in at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on Jan. 12. He was later released on a $2,000 bond set by a magistrate.

Court records list his charge as failing to stop after a vehicle crash involving injury or death, a Class 5 felony in Virginia. A conviction could carry up to 10 years in prison. Depending on whether punishment is set by a jury or judge, the offense may instead result in up to 12 months in jail and a fine of as much as $2,500.

Wang is scheduled for arraignment at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 20, followed by a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. on March 30.

Police have not said whether the Nissan driver will face charges. The crash remains under investigation.

Wheeler was one of three pedestrians killed in Fairfax County hit-and-run crashes over nine days. Police are still searching for drivers involved in two Jan. 7 crashes that killed pedestrians on Little River Turnpike in Annandale and Richmond Highway in Huntington.
