Vienna’s planned replacement for the Patrick Henry Library is moving toward construction, with demolition of the existing building scheduled to begin in early 2026 and completion anticipated in early 2028.

The Vienna-Carter Library and parking garage project will be built at 101 Maple Ave. E. Design and bidding concluded in July, and Costello Construction of Maryland received the construction contract on Sept. 18, 2025.

Construction fencing, permitting and site preparation were scheduled for late fall 2025, ahead of the library’s demolition.

The project will replace the current building with an approximately 19,000-square-foot, one-story library and a four-level parking structure containing 209 spaces.

Plans include a children’s reading area filled with natural light, study and play spaces for young readers, staff workspace and flexible community areas. An assembly room will be available for events during and after regular library hours, while an outdoor space will support reading and community gatherings.

Wider sidewalks, upgraded landscaping and indigenous vegetation are intended to improve the pedestrian experience along Maple Avenue.

The new building is designed to pursue LEED Gold certification and achieve Net Zero Energy performance. Planned environmental features include geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels, electric-vehicle charging stations, an enhanced building envelope, energy-saving systems and materials intended to support indoor air quality.

Underground chambers will also improve stormwater management at the site. The combined library and garage is intended to serve the Fairfax County Public Library system’s long-term needs while accommodating Vienna’s growing community.
