Dr. Allen S. Garai has practiced orthodontics in Northern Virginia since 1995, treating children, teenagers and adults from offices in Vienna and Great Falls.
His practice, Garai Orthodontic Specialists, provides Invisalign, lingual braces placed behind the teeth, traditional metal braces, ceramic braces and two-phase treatment for younger patients. The team also coordinates orthodontic preparation with oral surgeons when corrective jaw surgery is required.
Garai completed a one-year advanced general dentistry residency and a two-year orthodontics specialty program at Eastman Dental Center at the University of Rochester. His education also included training at Howard University.
At Eastman, Garai studied facial growth among patients with craniofacial abnormalities under Dr. J.D. Subtelny, a pioneer in treating such conditions. He later completed two years of formal residency training in lingual orthodontics.
Garai has worked with Invisalign for at least 15 years and was recognized as an Elite Provider in 2014 and 2015. He also has more than 15 years of experience with lingual braces, a discreet treatment fitted to the inside surfaces of the teeth.
Since 1998, he has taught lingual orthodontics at the Children’s and Washington Hospital Center Department of Orthodontics. He also serves as co-chair of the National Orofacial Institute Orthodontic Program, which is affiliated with MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and has presented lingual-treatment cases at a national American Association of Orthodontists meeting.
The American Board of Orthodontics has awarded Garai diplomate status. He has also received recognition from Washingtonian, Northern Virginia Magazine, Virginia Living, Washington Family Magazine and other regional and consumer publications. His television appearances have included NBC 4, News Channel 8 and the program “A New Me.”
Garai’s practice reports more than 1,500 patient reviews and says some families have returned for treatment across multiple generations.
The practice also offers an accelerated option called VIP Express Treatment, along with online scheduling, digital forms, a patient portal and financing through CareCredit. It accepts major insurance plans, including UnitedHealthcare, Aetna and Humana.
Outside the clinic, Garai sponsors several local youth sports leagues and enjoys soccer and other sports. He and his wife, Sherry, have three children.
Garai Orthodontic Specialists operates at 427 Maple Avenue West in Vienna and 9912D Georgetown Pike in Great Falls.
