Vienna Deputy Police Chief Dan Janickey will take charge of the town’s police department on Feb. 1, 2026, following Police Chief Jim Morris’ retirement.
Janickey emerged from a nationwide search whose finalists came from New York City, Virginia Beach, Texas, Washington state and Vienna. Town Manager Mercury Payton said all five candidates were highly qualified, but Janickey’s 35 years of varied law enforcement experience and established ties with public safety agencies and regional coalitions made him the strongest choice.
Janickey has served as Vienna’s deputy police chief since 2014, overseeing the department’s daily operations. He has also helped lead community policing efforts and introduce technology aimed at modernizing departmental resources.
Before joining Vienna, Janickey worked for the Fairfax County Police Department from 1989 through 2013. His assignments included serving as McLean commander, SWAT commander and hostage negotiator, along with work in internal affairs.
Janickey graduated from the FBI National Academy’s international executive leadership program in Quantico. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Bluefield University, a master’s degree in public administration from Liberty University and an executive leadership certificate from American University.
