Vienna’s temporary library will open Monday, July 21, bringing limited services back to town about a month later than initially planned because of permitting delays.

Fairfax County Public Library is preparing the 2,800-square-foot storefront at 262C Cedar Lane SE in the Cedar Park Shopping Center. Staff are moving books and furniture into the space, and a mailbox-style return bin is already available outside.

The branch will carry a small collection of books and other materials. Visitors can also place and pick up holds, connect to free Wi-Fi, use Chromebooks and attend limited programs such as story times.

Designed for quick visits rather than extended stays, the temporary location will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

A public ribbon-cutting and open house will be held Wednesday, July 23, at 9:30 a.m.

The temporary branch will serve Vienna until the permanent Vienna-Carter Library opens at 101 Maple Avenue East. The new 19,000-square-foot building will replace Patrick Henry Library, which closed May 9 after more than 50 years.

Plans also call for a four-level parking garage with 209 spaces, including 84 available for general public use.

The approximately $28 million project is being overseen by the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services. Funding includes $23 million from a county bond referendum approved in 2020 and a $5.64 million contribution from the Town of Vienna.

Construction is expected to begin this fall, with the new library projected to open for occupancy in early to mid-2027.
