David Huchler, a law enforcement veteran with 34 years of experience in Northern Virginia, will become the Vienna Police Department’s next deputy chief on April 6, 2026.
The town selected Huchler following a nationwide search. He previously held leadership roles with the Alexandria Police Department and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department.
Police Chief Dan Janickey said Huchler’s record, experience and work with regional partners will help the department adapt to the needs of Vienna’s growing community.
Huchler began his career as an Alexandria patrol officer in 1991. He advanced through the department while working in investigations, internal affairs, strategic response, crisis intervention, community policing and policy.
After retiring as Alexandria’s deputy police chief in April 2018, Huchler became police chief for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. He remained in that position until January 2026.
Vienna’s deputy chief position opened in February 2026 when Janickey was promoted to police chief. As the department’s second-in-command, Huchler will oversee daily internal operations. Janickey will concentrate on policy, long-range planning, external partnerships and community relations.
