Bear Branch Tavern has built a loyal following in Vienna with late-night dining, a lively patio and a Tuesday raw-bar special featuring $1 local oysters shucked to order.
The neighborhood restaurant opened in 2019 at 133 Maple Ave. E., becoming the first Vienna location from Vintage Restaurants. The Northern Virginia group, led by partners Wilson Whitney, Chris Lefbom and Adam Lubar, also operates Rhodeside Grill, Ragtime, Dogwood Tavern and William Jeffrey’s Tavern.
Lefbom, a Northern Virginia resident since childhood, saw an opportunity for a neighborhood tavern near the Washington & Old Dominion Trail. Bear Branch now caters to trail users as well as local families and late-night diners, with bike racks and water coolers installed for cyclists.
The restaurant occupies a former bank set back from Maple Avenue. Its old drive-through structure was preserved and converted into a three-season enclosed porch with operable windows.
Two dining and bar areas offer distinct settings. The Maple Bar has 25 seats, open-air windows, covered counter seating and televisions visible throughout the space. An expansive patio includes heaters and a fire pit, allowing guests to dine outdoors in cooler weather.
Tavern Favorites and Late-Night Dining
Bear Branch serves a modern American tavern menu built around familiar dishes and several less conventional options. Popular selections include ahi tuna nachos, a crab cake sandwich, French dip and grilled chicken wings.
Appetizers range from $6 to $15, while entrees generally cost between $16 and $30. A separate late-night menu provides more variety than the limited burgers-and-fries selections often found after 10 p.m.
Weekend brunch runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and includes a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar. The tavern opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends, remaining open until 2 a.m. daily.
Raw Bar Takes Over Tuesday Nights
The restaurant’s Tuesday raw bar centers on $1 locally sourced oysters prepared to order. The weekly menu also includes peel-and-eat steamed shrimp, Bar Harbor mussels cooked with white wine and garlic, steamed Alaskan snow crab clusters and Cajun hush puppies.
Bear Branch also offers rotating kitchen and bar specials throughout the week. Happy hour runs from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with $2 discounts on draft beer, cocktails and house wine.
Staying Connected to Vienna
The tavern has participated in Vienna community programs and is a member of the Vienna Business Association. One holiday promotion included a $20 bonus card with each $100 gift-card purchase, along with a limited-edition eggnog produced in Vienna. Five dollars from every bottle benefited the local One Neighborhood Foundation.
When the COVID-19 pandemic halted indoor dining, Bear Branch began selling takeout craft-cocktail kits and disposable growlers of beer as a way to support its bartenders and continue serving customers.
Those efforts, along with its trail-friendly amenities and weekly specials, have helped turn the once-unassuming former bank into a neighborhood gathering place just off Maple Avenue.
