Gov. Abigail Spanberger has signed the first batch of affordability legislation approved during a Virginia General Assembly session that passed more than 1,200 bills. The measures address housing, health care and energy costs.
More than 1,000 Vienna homes and businesses lost electricity Wednesday morning after a fire at an electrical substation near Town Hall. Dominion Energy restored service to most customers before 11 a.m. and reached the remaining locations by mid-afternoon.
Virginia has postponed a restriction that would prevent Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients from buying sweetened beverages with SNAP benefits. Announced on Dec. 10, 2025, the change was scheduled to begin April 1, 2026, but the Virginia Department of Social Services now says it will take effect in October.
Fairfax County police released surveillance video of a man suspected in the London Towne burglary investigation. Security cameras recorded the apparently nude suspect attempting to enter a home in the 14800 block of Palmerston Square in Centreville shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday.
An off-duty Fairfax County police officer was arrested and charged with being drunk in public following a March 31 incident in Fair Oaks. Officers responded around 6:23 p.m. to the 11000 block of Route 50 after receiving a report of an intoxicated man who was acting disorderly and refusing to leave. The 31-year-old officer has been placed on administrative leave.
A roughly $1-per-gallon increase in regional gas prices over the past month is creating new challenges for D.C.-area food nonprofits. Higher transportation costs are complicating budgets, volunteer recruitment, donations and food deliveries.
Data center growth concentrated in Loudoun and Prince William counties could also affect the Potomac River’s ability to supply enough drinking water for customers served by Fairfax Water, WSSC Water and the Washington Aqueduct, according to the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin.
Historic Huntley in Groveton has joined the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
