Virginia could lose more than 10,000 jobs in 2026 as the state’s economy enters another slowdown, according to a new University of Virginia forecast.

Researchers found that Virginia frequently underperformed the national economy last year, particularly during the federal government shutdown in October. Northern Virginia could again play an outsized role in the downturn.

A man accused of fatally stabbing a woman at a Hybla Valley bus stop last month had previously served two years in prison for attacking another man near a Richmond Highway 7-Eleven in February 2023. Jalloh was arrested twice after his release, triggering a probation violation, but prosecutors did not seek to impose five years of previously suspended prison time.

Virginia State Police said the dog killed during a road-rage stabbing on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County belonged to the suspect. The incident occurred on southbound I-495 near Exit 52 and remains under investigation.

A bill requiring ingredient labels on menstrual products sold in Virginia is headed to Gov. Abigail Spanberger after clearing the General Assembly. House Bill 998, introduced by Del. Holly Seibold, D-Fairfax, is intended to give consumers more information about potentially toxic substances in reproductive health products. The governor can sign, amend or veto the measure.

Legislation allowing multifamily housing by right in commercial zones continues to advance despite opposition from Alexandria and other Northern Virginia localities. Del. Dan Helmer’s House Bill 816 moved to the full Senate on Monday, March 2, with an amendment setting a July 1, 2031, expiration date. The House of Delegates gave the Senate version of the proposal a second reading Tuesday.

A small office building at 6320 Castle Place in Seven Corners has sold for $2.7 million. The property had been vacant for years and previously housed MVI Post, a family-owned post-production company that filed for bankruptcy in 2009.

Justice Cleo E. Powell was formally sworn in Monday as chief justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia. She is the first Black woman to lead the court and its only current member to have served as a judge at every level of Virginia’s judicial system.

George Mason University’s women’s basketball team has secured a share of the 2026 Atlantic 10 regular-season championship, the first regular-season conference title in program history. The Patriots finished conference play with a program-best 16-2 record.
