Virginia lawmakers will return to Richmond in June for another attempt to approve the state’s next two-year spending plan. With the new fiscal year only days away, the continuing stalemate has left school systems uncertain about their funding.
A bus driver charged after a chain-reaction crash killed five people on Interstate 95 in Stafford County had previously received a speeding ticket. Maryland State Police cited the driver March 6 for allegedly traveling 72 mph in a 50-mph zone, and a court appearance had been scheduled for this week.
Questions are also emerging about wastewater from Virginia data centers. Most facilities may send discharged water through municipal treatment systems, but limited data is available about potentially present chemicals.
In Reston, Bechtel Corp. is expanding its headquarters footprint by subleasing nearly 55,000 square feet at Democracy Tower, 11955 Democracy Drive. The two-floor addition will bring the company’s Reston Town Center presence to almost 350,000 square feet. The current tenant was not identified, though AOL previously disclosed plans to lay off 108 employees based in the building.
Virginia residents will be permitted to use plug-in “balcony” solar systems with maximum output of 1,200 watts beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Similar systems became available to Maryland residents June 2.
Nearly 70 adults, teenagers and children spent Saturday morning picking up trash around Culmore in Bailey’s Crossroads. Andres Curtin, strategy director for Crossroads Opportunity Neighborhoods at Second Story, organized the neighborhood cleanup.
Big Al & The Jokers, a nine-member European band from Latvia, will make its U.S. debut at the Reston Town Center Pavilion on June 5 and 6. Both Concerts on the Town performances are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
Pasha Castle is already attracting lines following its grand opening in a two-story red house in Annandale. The dessert shop serves hot mini pancakes alongside Middle Eastern and Turkish sweets, including baklava, knafeh, lokum and booza, a frozen dessert described by an employee as Lebanese gelato.
Tuesday’s forecast calls for sunshine, a high near 75 degrees and northeast winds of 7 to 9 mph. Skies should remain mostly clear overnight as temperatures fall to about 57 degrees.
