A federal judge has ordered Lindsey Halligan to explain why she continues identifying herself as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia after another judge ruled in November that her appointment was unlawful.
Virginia lawmakers are also considering legislation that would give them oversight of federal deployments involving the commonwealth’s National Guard. Del. Dan Helmer said the measure would require legal and funding reviews while prohibiting use of the Guard to interfere in an election.
Falls Church could adopt ranked-choice voting for City Council races as early as 2027. Elections director David Bjerke told the city’s Electoral Board on Monday that new voting equipment capable of handling the format should arrive in time for those elections.
Another General Assembly proposal targets Virginia’s aging social-services technology. House Bill 66, introduced by Del. Michael Feggans of Virginia Beach, would direct state medical-assistance and social-services agencies to modernize systems used to administer health and social programs.
Rep. James Walkinshaw, elected last fall to represent Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, identified the Jan. 30 deadline for passing a new federal budget as Congress’ biggest immediate challenge. He also called health care affordability a real and urgent concern requiring action.
SoberRide has surpassed 100,000 passengers since launching in 1991. The holiday program, operated by the Tysons-based Washington Regional Alcohol Program to discourage impaired driving, provided free rides to 1,446 people during last week’s New Year’s holiday.
