Virginia Democrats filed an emergency appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday, seeking to block a ruling that invalidated a ballot measure capable of giving the party four additional winnable U.S. House seats.

The appeal comes as another Supreme Court decision raises concerns about Black political representation in Virginia. The ruling weakened a key enforcement mechanism of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, potentially carrying greater consequences if Republicans regain full control of state government after the next census.

In Fairfax County, two women were arrested on alleged sex-trafficking charges following a police search of a massage business on Ashlar Way in the Huntington area. Both were being held without bond in Alexandria.

Virginia also became the first Southern state—and one of more than a dozen nationwide—to offer paid family and medical leave after Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed a new law in April. Spanberger said the program is intended to help smaller businesses retain employees facing difficult circumstances.

The Fairfax County Police Department is placing more automated external defibrillators in the hands of patrol officers. Each district station will receive five Avive Connect AEDs for distribution across patrol shifts, allowing officers to respond more quickly to cardiac emergencies.

Drivers in the City of Fairfax should prepare for a temporary closure on Warwick Avenue between Fairfax Boulevard and Farr Avenue. Through traffic will be blocked from May 12 through May 22, with motorists rerouted along Farr Avenue to Fairfax Boulevard.

In Reston, the Hook Road Recreation Area ballfields have reopened after months of construction and nearly a decade of planning. Reston Association leaders, community officials and families marked the completed renovation with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday morning.

Maryland’s 16-mile Purple Line reached another milestone Thursday when crews installed the final section of track. The light-rail route between New Carrollton and Bethesda is about 90% complete after nearly a decade of work and is expected to begin carrying passengers in winter 2027.

Tuesday’s forecast calls for sunshine and a high near 71 degrees, with a light north wind becoming variable. Clouds will increase overnight as temperatures fall to around 55. South winds of 6 to 11 mph could produce gusts as high as 21 mph.
