Virginia’s largest offshore wind project has begun delivering commercial power to the grid, leading a busy Wednesday news roundup that also includes police investigations, court developments and a toll-payment scam warning.
Dominion Energy switched on the first commercial turbine in its Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project Monday. Located off Virginia Beach, the 14.7-megawatt turbine is separate from two pilot turbines operating since 2020. The development is described as the nation’s largest offshore wind project.
Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run on Interstate 395 in Alexandria. A pedestrian was found dead around 6:12 a.m. Tuesday on the northbound side of the highway near the Duke Street exit.
A Fairfax County man received a 10-year prison sentence for assaults and attempted abductions near Metro stations in Alexandria last year. Nine years were suspended, leaving one year to serve. He was sentenced Friday, March 20, on assault, sexual battery and attempted abduction charges.
Fairfax County police are warning residents about fraudulent text messages demanding immediate payment for supposed unpaid tolls. The messages falsely invoke the Fairfax County General District Court and threaten penalties or legal action to pressure recipients into responding.
