James R. Walkinshaw is gaining prominent endorsements in his campaign to represent Virginia’s 11th Congressional District after Rep. Gerry Connolly announced he would not seek reelection in 2026 because his esophageal cancer had worsened.
Connolly delivered Walkinshaw’s first major endorsement. Walkinshaw previously served as the congressman’s chief of staff and is now the Braddock District representative on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
“I know James Walkinshaw is ready to carry the torch forward,” Connolly said, describing his former chief of staff as a partner in progress and one of the most capable and principled public servants with whom he has worked.
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay more recently announced that every Democrat on the board had endorsed Walkinshaw, calling him the leader needed for a “five-alarm moment.”
Walkinshaw said he was honored to have the backing of his fellow supervisors. He cited their work opposing President Donald Trump’s agenda, protecting shared values and advancing policies for Fairfax families, adding that he was prepared to continue that work in Congress from his first day.
His endorsements include elected and appointed officials at the federal, state and local levels.
Springfield resident Michael Van Meter has announced that he will run as the Republican candidate for the seat in the 2026 midterm elections. The election is scheduled for November 2026.
