Mount Vernon’s neighborhood music festival, Waynewoodstock, will return for its second year with two stages, several local bands and better preparations for wet weather.
The family-friendly event begins at noon Saturday, May 17, at 1027 Dalebrook Drive. The Waynewood Citizens Association is sponsoring the stage, while Chalkboard Wings & BBQ will again handle the food.
Scheduled performers include Porch Pirates, Rachel’s Decision, Disco Spears and Borrowed Players. Rachel’s Decision describes itself as the DMV’s best “dad band” with a mom as its singer.
Resident musician and organizer Geoff Schwartzman said last year’s inaugural festival drew smiling faces despite steady rain. Organizers learned from that experience and have upgraded the tents for this year’s event.
“We knew the rain was a possibility,” Schwartzman said of the first festival. “It was steady but not super heavy.”
This year’s two-stage setup is intended to keep the music moving. While performers clear one stage, the next act can prepare on the other.
The festival is also being promoted with a colorful, Woodstock-inspired poster created by Schwartzman’s wife. Although the neighborhood show is far smaller than the landmark 1969 concert, Schwartzman said he liked the idea of weaving songs from Woodstock’s historic setlists into the event.
