West Springfield’s football season is still alive after the Spartans followed a Patriot League championship with a commanding 48-13 playoff victory over West Potomac.
The win sends West Springfield to the regional final against Fairfax, with a potential trip to the state championship in December at stake. Friday night’s game will be played at West Springfield.
The Spartans secured the league title Nov. 7 by defeating division rival Lake Braddock 34-31. West Springfield entered that contest on a lengthy winning streak after opening the season with a victory over West Potomac, losing to Chantilly and Madison, and then recovering with six consecutive wins.
In the Nov. 14 playoff rematch with West Potomac, quarterback Scott Lewis completed 12 of 18 passes and threw five touchdowns. Receiver Javon Austin caught three of those scoring passes as the Spartans pulled away.
Running back Brady Davies, linebacker and slot receiver Zachary Norton, and linemen Ayaan Mirza and Micah Dargan-Coley also delivered notable performances.
Head coach Anthony Parker guided the Spartans with a balanced mix of running and passing plays.
“The win will keep these seniors playing as long as possible,” Parker said.
Springfield Supervisor Pat Herrity, a West Springfield alumnus and booster, said he was extremely proud of what the team had accomplished so far.
