West Springfield quarterback Scott Lewis threw five touchdown passes as the Spartans overwhelmed the West Potomac Wolverines 48-13 in the first round of the Patriot League playoffs Friday, Nov. 14.
Lewis completed 12 of 18 passes, connecting with receiver Javon Austin for three of his five scores. The performance helped West Springfield exploit West Potomac’s pass defense and quickly put the playoff game out of reach.
The victory sends the Spartans to a regional final against Fairfax the following week, with a potential path to the state championship in December.
West Springfield head coach Anthony Parker employed a balanced mix of running and passing plays. Running back and linebacker Brady Davies, linebacker and slot receiver Zachary Norton, and linemen Ayaan Mirza and Micah Dargan-Coley also delivered notable performances.
“The win will keep these seniors playing as long as possible,” Parker said.
West Springfield opened its season with a win over West Potomac before losing consecutive games to Chantilly and Madison. The Spartans then reversed course with a lengthy winning streak, including a 34-31 rivalry victory on Nov. 7, one week before their playoff rematch with the Wolverines.
“As a Spartan alumnus and booster, I am extremely proud of the team this year and all they have accomplished to date,” said Springfield Supervisor Pat Herrity.
