Doug Craig’s leadership of the Woodson High School boys varsity basketball team earned statewide recognition after a 2024-25 season that included three championships and a second-place finish in Virginia.

Craig was named the Virginia High School League Class 6 All-State Basketball Coach of the Year. Under his guidance, Woodson won the district regular-season, district tournament and regional tournament championships before finishing as the state runner-up.

Blair Smith, Woodson’s director of student activities, credited Craig’s dedication, strategic approach and ability to bring out the best in his players for the team’s success.

Craig teaches astronomy at Woodson while also coaching varsity basketball. His coaching emphasizes preparation, teamwork and character, with growth and accountability taking priority alongside wins and losses.

Smith said Craig adapts his strategy each year to suit his players’ strengths and potential. His teams are also shaped by a defense-oriented approach and an emphasis on discipline and collaboration.

The recognition of Craig coincided with National Coaches Day on Oct. 6, an annual observance honoring athletic coaches and other mentors who help students develop resilience, leadership and confidence.
