Barrett Pullen began throwing shot put as a Woodson High School freshman, initially viewing the sport as another activity to enjoy with friends. He has since recorded a throw of 61 feet, 1.25 inches, placing him among the nation’s top 10 high school competitors.

Pullen credits steady training and close attention to technique for his rise in the rankings. His coaches have helped him refine his spins, improve his form and build strength through weight training.

Woodson indoor and outdoor track and field head coach Katarina Zuber said Pullen has worked hard to develop his throwing skills and eagerly supports his teammates. She also described him as a dedicated student whose classroom accomplishments make him a well-rounded student-athlete and a role model for others on the team.

During indoor track season, Pullen practices for two hours after school each day while keeping up with his coursework. He completes some homework during the school day and finishes the rest after practice, saying athletics gives his schedule structure.

Although shot put is scored as an individual event, Pullen draws motivation from representing Woodson and competing alongside his teammates. He also plays baseball and throws the discus during the spring season.

Pullen encourages younger students to try track and field even if they have no prior experience. His own involvement introduced him to a broader community and helped him form friendships with competitors from other schools.

His goals for the year include reaching the mid-60-foot range, competing at the state level and in national competition this summer, and continuing to throw shot put in college.
