Construction to replace an aging underground culvert on Nutley Street near Marshall Road in Vienna is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2026, launching a five-phase project expected to take nearly a year.
The first phase will temporarily remove the center median at the town’s southwest entrance and close one northbound lane of Nutley Street SW. That phase is expected to continue through March, with the remaining phases following immediately.
Work will generally occur on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lane closures, however, will remain in place throughout the project, including outside working hours. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes.
The existing culvert was installed in 1962 and has difficulty handling stormwater runoff during heavy rain, Deputy Public Works Director Alan Chen said. Replacing it is intended to improve the town’s stormwater system and reduce long-term flood risks in southwest Vienna.
Development over the past six decades has covered previously open ground with homes and other impervious surfaces, limiting the amount of water absorbed into the soil and increasing runoff.
The undersized culvert will be replaced with two box culverts, each measuring 6 feet by 10 feet. The project is expected to be completed by January 2027.
