Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed legislation that would have raised the state minimum wage and prohibited assault weapons in public spaces, while several new facilities and businesses moved forward across Fairfax County.

Monday was Youngkin’s deadline to act on roughly 900 bills approved by the General Assembly. He signed more than 300 measures that afternoon and issued several vetoes.

In Loudoun County, Youngkin also announced plans to use a budget amendment to support turning President James Monroe’s former home into a state park. Earlier efforts to establish the park encountered resistance in the state Senate.

Former U.S. Attorney Jessica D. Aber, who led the Eastern District of Virginia and died at age 43, had suffered from a serious medical condition for years. Police told people close to her that foul play is not suspected, according to two family friends.

Fairfax County has appointed Matt Harrison as director of its Department of Information Technology, effective April 21. Harrison, most recently the head of Stafford County’s IT department, will succeed retiring director Greg Scott.

Fire and rescue personnel are moving into the newly completed Fort Buffalo Fire Station in Seven Corners. The department shared video of the move on March 20, and a grand opening is expected in May.

In Annandale, Flavor Hive is previewing its forthcoming restaurant with food trucks stationed outside the former Wells Fargo building where construction continues. Customers have formed long lines for offerings that include the company’s signature “walking taco chips bag.”

J.Crew Factory is also reporting steady business at its new Fairfax City Mall location. The store opened Feb. 13 at 9650-42 Main St., and Mayor Catherine Read joined local business leaders for a March 20 ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Cherry blossoms are nearing peak bloom around the Tidal Basin, with additional viewing options across the region. Fairfax County destinations include Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Wolf Trap and the Van Gogh Bridge at Lake Anne in Reston.

Clouds are expected to increase Tuesday as temperatures reach about 61 degrees, with southwest winds of 7 to 11 mph. Rain is possible Tuesday night, with a 50% chance of precipitation before 2 a.m. The overnight low will be around 41 degrees.
