A former Vienna restaurant space is set for a sweet transformation as Arlington-born Bakeshop prepares to open at 421 Maple Avenue this summer.

The bakery has leased the 1,934-square-foot storefront previously occupied by Skorpios Maggio’s Greek Family Restaurant, a family-owned fixture that had operated since 1990.

Skorpios Maggio’s closed on June 13, 2024. Owners Chris and Sherry Maggio said they were stepping away to prioritize their family time and health. Although the family initially indicated that new owners might continue the restaurant’s traditions and flavors, those plans did not materialize at the Maple Avenue location.

Bakeshop founder and owner Justin Stegall began making cupcakes in his mother’s kitchen and supplying them to local coffee shops. He opened the company’s first storefront in Arlington’s Clarendon neighborhood in 2010, during the nationwide gourmet cupcake boom.

The business has since expanded its menu beyond cupcakes. Its offerings include cakes, macarons, cookies, pies and breakfast sandwiches, along with some vegan and gluten-free treats.

Bakeshop added a Falls Church location in 2019 and later opened in Georgetown, though the Georgetown shop appears to have permanently closed.

General manager Monica Garcia said the team selected Vienna because it had “always loved the community feel.” She said the new shop will resemble Bakeshop’s other two locations while developing its own identity and atmosphere.

The bakery also emphasizes hiring students from nearby high schools, a practice Garcia said helps connect each shop with its surrounding community.

Bakeshop hopes to welcome customers at its Vienna location this summer.
