Vienna’s donut competition has a new contender, with Shipley Donuts opening at 256 Maple Avenue East and bringing its signature hexagonal glazed treats to town.

The Texas-based chain officially opened Monday, June 22, next to Smoothie King. It fills a long-vacant storefront formerly occupied by T-Mobile and sits across the street from Texas Donuts, which opened in December.

Founded by baker Lawrence Shipley Sr. in Houston during the 1940s, Shipley Donuts has grown to more than 380 locations across 13 states. The Vienna store is only its second in Virginia, following a Lynchburg location that opened in early June 2025.

The company added 13 stores last year and is pursuing further national expansion under owner Levine Leichtman Capital Partners, which acquired the chain from another private equity firm last year.

Shipley’s glazed donuts stand out for their six-sided shape. Bakers form them by hand and arrive at 3 a.m. each day so early customers can buy them hot.

The Vienna menu offers 40 donut varieties, including chocolate glazed, iced and cake donuts, along with cream- and jelly-filled selections. Donut holes, apple fritters, bear claws, glazed cinnamon twists and iced chocolate twists are also available.

Savory kolaches are another menu staple. Varieties include sausage and cheese, plain sausage, ham and cheese, and multiple egg-and-cheese combinations, all wrapped in an enclosed, Texas-style pastry.

Customers can purchase donuts and kolaches individually or by the box. Hot and iced coffee are available, including 96-ounce containers for groups.

For the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary, the shop is also offering limited-time Fourth of July donuts decorated with red, white and blue icing and holiday sprinkles. They will remain available through July 5.

The Vienna location is open daily from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.
