A Reston volunteer group distributed 290 backpacks filled with winter essentials in December, helping people experiencing homelessness across Reston, Herndon and Vienna begin 2025 with additional protection from the elements.

Made in Reston organizer Rosa Simon said the backpacks were designed for people who may spend many hours outdoors. They contained supplies intended to make that time safer and more comfortable, including toiletries, body wipes, clean clothing, hand warmers, hats, gloves and sunscreen.

Volunteers also provided plastic envelopes to keep important documents dry. New backpacks are a recurring need because those used by unhoused residents frequently become wet or damaged, Simon said.

The effort grew from relationships Simon and her children formed nearly 20 years ago with unhoused people they encountered along a Reston walking path. As the family learned more about their circumstances, they began identifying practical ways to help.

The winter 2024 collection followed backpack drives held in winter 2023 and spring 2024. The initiative has also led Made in Reston to undertake other projects, including producing about 2,000 face masks when supplies were scarce during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organization now serves hot meals three times each week. Simon said growing awareness of its work has encouraged more community members to donate supplies and volunteer.

Beyond meeting immediate material needs, the group seeks to provide conversation, encouragement and continuing relationships. Simon said its assistance helped more than 20 people move from the streets into more stable living situations last year.

Made in Reston is now celebrating 24 people who have overcome significant obstacles, found employment, continued meeting regularly with Simon and returned to volunteer alongside the organization. The group plans to expand its reach in the new year while continuing to support people both during homelessness and as they work toward greater stability.
