South Lakes High School has developed a specialized graduation ceremony for students who benefit from an adapted curriculum, offering an accessible alternative to an event that can be overwhelming because of its crowds, noise and length.
Intellectual disabilities teacher Lindsay Crytzer worked with fellow teachers and student leaders to tailor the celebration to participants’ individual needs. The ceremony gives every student an opportunity to be recognized while honoring each graduate’s distinct journey.
Crytzer also helps students build skills for life after graduation. She has led a student-run bracelet business and a coffee cart serving school staff, projects designed to encourage independence and confidence.
Her work earned her recognition in 2025 as a finalist for the FCPS Outstanding New Secondary Teacher award.
“Lindsay is deeply committed to fostering a classroom environment rooted in diversity, acceptance, and belonging,” Principal Carlos Seward said. “She celebrates each student’s unique abilities and works to ensure every learner feels seen, supported, and valued. Through her inclusive approach, she cultivates resilience and independence, preparing students for meaningful success in life after school.”
