Nine DMV-area artists will transform words, letters and even repurposed IKEA table legs into collaborative artwork during a June exhibition at Reston Art Gallery and Studios.

The CoLab Collage Artists—Parinaz Bahadori, Jennifer Duncan, Rosemarie Forsythe, Doug Fuller, Julia Malakoff, Molly McCracken, Marthe McGrath, Jennifer Penick and Doug Schulte—will exhibit at the Lake Anne gallery from June 6 through June 28.

The show features more than 20 individual collages, several large collaborative sculptures and 30 smaller collaborative sculptures. Its two- and three-dimensional works combine paint, paper, fabric, found objects and handcrafted materials.

Text is central to many of the pieces. Some use words and phrases to communicate ideas directly, while others turn letters, fonts and other elements of written language into patterns, textures and visual forms.

The artists’ newest joint project, “Text Blocks,” uses IKEA table legs as frameworks for collage. Visitors can watch live demonstrations throughout the month as the artists continue developing the pieces inside the gallery.

Proceeds from sales of the “Text Blocks” and larger collaborative works will benefit Cornerstones, a local nonprofit that connects people in need with housing, child care, food and financial assistance.

This is the group’s third consecutive year exhibiting at the Reston gallery. The artists also showed their work at the Fred Schnieder Gallery in Arlington during summer 2024. They formed the group to exchange feedback, encourage one another and build friendships and community through a shared interest in collage.

The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. An opening reception is scheduled for June 6 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Visitors can make collaged postcards with the artists on June 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. A closing reception will take place June 28 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Reston Art Gallery and Studios is at 11400 Washington Plaza W., Suite B, on Lake Anne Plaza in Reston.
